pornkillsloveFTND / 02 MAR 2015 – Yep, you read that right.

Even we were shocked by the stat.

Channel 4 News in London, U.K., recently investigated the extent of the Twitter porn community and has revealed that as many as 500,000 sexual images are posted daily, including images of hardcore and extreme sexual practices.

Their analysts found that roughly one in every thousand tweets on Twitter is a pornographic image. That means that there are more pictures of porn than there are of pets.

Woah.

Now, it’s important to point out that both Facebook and Instagram do not allow porn on their platforms. Even Vine, the 6-second video sharing platform that Twitter owns, has a ban on posting porn as well.

But Twitter itself, with its 232 million active users worldwide, has almost zero restrictions on posting porn. And because Twitter has allowed itself to become the wild west of social media, the porn industry sees Twitter as one of the few remaining social media outlets for its products.

Not cool.

One porn model with more than 60,000 Twitter followers, told Channel 4 News: “When I first came into the industry one of the first pieces of advice was to get on Twitter. It’s about building your profile, you can see who’s shooting and it’s a good way of contacting people. 97% of the work I’ve got is me approaching people and them approaching me on Twitter.”

Let’s read that first sentence again: “When I first came into the industry one of the first pieces of advice was to get on Twitter.”

That should tell you something.

One of the biggest problems with this is that Twitter is hugely popular among children. Of the UK’s 15 million Twitter users, it’s estimated more than a million are under 18 years old.

Twitter has no controls to stop kids from seeing porn on the site. Not only does it not ask for your age when you sign-up, but it also allows anyone to browse Twitter and view content without signing in. This means that even if Twitter introduced age restrictions on the site, kids without an account would still be able to view porn without logging in.

Twitter does allow users to mark their content as “adults-only”, which means viewers are given a warning message that they must tap to dismiss before viewing the image.

Another porn model with a sizeable Twitter following, told Channel 4 News: “You can have a warning which comes up every time you post a picture which says click if you want to see it. So it doesn’t just come up on someone’s screen. They have to click to see it. That’s as censored as Twitter gets. I try to be clear on my bio that it’s an 18-plus acccount.”

But that’s really not a huge obstacle at all. First, a ton of accounts don’t even bother marking their content as adult only so that warning doesn’t come at all. Second, the warnings can be dismissed with a single click to reveal the image.

Bottom line: anyone who is on Twitter can be exposed to hardcore porn at any time due to the site turning a complete and total blind eye to the issue.

Even the porn model’s themselves have a higher standard that they think Twitter should be held to. One of them said, “I think Twitter should look at filtering and putting in an 18+ restriction. I think everyone in the adult industry would think that’s the right thing. We have children and younger family members and don’t want them seeing stuff that is too full-on and inappropriate.”

Wow. If the ones posting the porn are the ones saying that Twitter should tighten things up a bit, then you know the problem is getting ridiculous.

We are not here to bash on Twitter. We are in the Twitterverse all the time and have an awesome following of Fighters on our Twitter account. Twitter is awesome because it’s a place where you can connect with your favorite celebrities and see some hilarious stuff. But it’s important to remember that porn is becoming increasing popular on the platform. Be mindful of who you follow, who they follow, and what they retweet. Remember that you don’t have to be following porn accounts for it to pop up in your feed. And that’s what we’re not cool with.

Become a Fighter and tweet on.

What YOU Can Do

If you’re not cool with Twitter’s lax restrictions on porn, SHARE this article so people are aware of the problem. We should all be able to chill on Twitter without having to worry about seeing hardcore porn. Spread the word.
