All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16,17, NASB

Have you ever heard someone say they had trouble ‘getting into’ the Word of God? Perhaps it was because of their approach. Someone who is truly in love with the Lord soon comes to see the Bible as God’s love letter to Christians. To that person, Abraham, Moses, Esther, Luke, John, Paul, Peter… all begin to feel like family. I like how Thomas Watson, a man devoted to the study of the Word, directs our thoughts about reading the Word.

Read the Bible with reverence. Realize that in every line you read, God is speaking to you. The ark into which the law was placed was overlaid with pure gold, and was carried on bars, that the Levites might not touch it (see Exodus 25:14), and why was this, but to breed in the people reverence to the law?

Read with seriousness. It is a matter of life and death; by this Word you must be tried. Conscience and Scripture are the jury God will proceed by in judging you.

Read the Word with affection. Get your hearts quickened with the Word. Go to it to fetch fire. Labor that the Word may not only be a lamp to direct, but a fire to warm. Read the Scripture, not only as history, but as a love letter sent to you from God which may affect your heart.

Pray that the same Spirit that wrote the Word may assist you in the reading of it.

Dear saint, have you checked your mail lately? There’s a love letter waiting.

~ 1 Chronicles 26-27; 2 Peter 1; Micah 4; Luke 13
